How we cure mold sickness or CIRS
The CIRS Shoemaker Protocol for mold, the only scientifically validated treatment for CIRS was founded by Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker, MD who led the fight for CIRS to be a recognized medical condition.
Our CIRS doctor Mark Volmer, FMP, R.Ac. did his initial CIRS training with Dr. Shoemaker and Dr. Heyman at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). He then went on to continue his education with one on one training with Dr. Shoemaker. In 2023 he passed the highest certification to become a Shoemaker Protocol Practitioner.
Jane Prescot, FMCHC, our other CIRS doctor, is a CIRS Proficiency Partner Diplomate and a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach. She completed her training through the Surviving Mold website, alongside Dr. Shoemaker.
Our practitioners will work closely with you through the 12 steps of Dr. Shoemaker’s Protocol. It’s important to be patient throughout this process and be diligent in following the Shoemaker Protocol steps. Mold illness or biotoxin illness can take more than a year to cure because the root cause lies within your genes.
After conducting a genetic test (GENIE) that will examine the genes inside your mitochondria and confirming whether you are suffering from CIRS, they will proceed with the Shoemaker Protocol.
The 12 Shoemaker Protocol Steps:
Shoemaker Protocol Step One:
We test the environments that you regularly spend time in for mold to determine your level of mold exposure and exposure to biotoxins. Water-damaged buildings are especially ideal for mold growth and spreading. If you can’t leave a mold-infested environment, we will advise you on the best course of action for surviving mold.
Shoemaker Protocol Step Two:
You will begin treatment with a supplement known as a binder. It adheres to the mold toxins within your cells and helps your body excrete them. This process may take several months.
Shoemaker Protocol Step Three:
A common side effect of CIRS is MARCoNS, a nasal cavity infection. We will prescribe you a nasal spray to use to fight it off.
Shoemaker Protocol Step Four:
Your body will be incredibly sensitive to gluten. We will help you adopt a gluten-free diet, a low-amylose diet, and look for cross-reactivity with other similar foods.
Shoemaker Protocol Step Five:
We dive into your hormones and work to correct any blood sugar imbalances.
Shoemaker Protocol Step Six through Twelve:
Using your hormonal diagnosis, we will help correct your imbalances through targeted supplementation.

If you suffer from CIRS or mold illness, you may experience:
- Debilitating fatigue
- Unusual body pains
- Headaches
- Sinus problems
- Memory issues
- Mood swings
- Tremors
- And many more inexplicable symptoms
CIRS or mold illness can also cause:
- IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
- CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
- Fibromyalgia
- Multiple Chemical Sensitivities
- Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)
While most people’s symptoms of mold illness clear up when they are no longer in a mold-infested environment, about 25% of the population develop a chronic immune response that overreacts and causes symptoms that do not disappear even when the person has left the mold-infested environment.
Once people with CIRS have been exposed to mold, the mold does not leave their body. As a result, their immune systems do not turn off, resulting in IBS, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.
The Possible Causes of Mold Illness
Mold is far more common than you may think. In fact, up Up to 50% of all building structures have water damage resulting in mold growth!
You could be living in a moldy home and not even know it.
Mold exposure can cause:
- Runny noses
- Irritated eyes
- Headaches
- Chest tightness
- Skin rashes
- Sore throats
- Coughing
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- And more
Those with CIRS experience debilitating symptoms even when they leave a mold-infested environment due to their genetic makeup which makes it difficult for their immune system to expel mold toxins (mycotoxins). When the toxins never leave their bodies, this causes chronic inflammation and other health issues.
