How to Treat CIRS Naturally

Last Updated on: February 23, 2024 by Mark Volmer

Do natural treatments work on CIRS?

The debate between natural treatments and pharmaceuticals is ongoing.

While pharmaceuticals have absolutely changed modern medicine and saved countless lives, there is a growing recognition of the unique advantages offered by natural remedies. Natural remedies, derived from plants, herbs, and other natural sources, are often considered preferable by those who prioritize a holistic and gentle approach to healing.

In this article, we will explore three key reasons why many patients believe natural treatments are better than pharmaceuticals.

  1. Safety and Minimal Side Effects:

One significant advantage of natural treatments is they generally have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceuticals. Natural remedies are often sourced from nature and have been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems. They tend to have a milder impact on the body, and it is less likely they will cause adverse reactions and long-term complications. Pharmaceuticals may contain synthetic chemicals and carry a higher risk of undesirable side effects. However, fans of natural remedies believe they work in harmony with the body’s natural processes. Fans of natural remedies believe they support the body’s inherent healing abilities.

  1. Holistic Approach to Health:

Natural remedies are in line with a holistic approach to health. This means  they work with the body, mind, and spirit. Instead of merely targeting symptoms, they seek to address the root causes of illness and promote overall well-being. Natural remedies often look at other factors, such as lifestyle, diet, stress levels, and emotional well-being, believing that these aspects influence one’s health. By focusing on the underlying issues and supporting the body’s healing ability, natural remedies aim to restore balance and optimize health on multiple levels.

  1. Nourishing and Sustainable:

Another key reason why patients prefer natural remedies is because they can nourish the body while being environmentally sustainable. Many pharmaceutical drugs only to target specific symptoms or conditions. On the other hand, natural remedies often contain a wide range of beneficial compounds, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, which can nourish and promote optimal health. Plus, the creation of natural remedies can be more sustainable and eco-friendly, which reduces the environmental impact associated with pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

While natural remedies may not be suitable for every medical condition, they offer an alternative approach that resonates with those seeking gentler, holistic, and more sustainable solutions for their health.

However, it is extremely important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional when considering natural remedies. This is because their effectiveness and safety can vary depending on individual circumstances.

But by combining the best of modern medicine and traditional wisdom, patients can make informed choices that align with their personal values and goals for health and well-being.

Is CIRS a good candidate for natural treatment?

This depends on what you mean when you say natural. If you’re strictly referring to zero pharmaceuticals, then no, CIRS can not be treated naturally.

This is because vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is an important step in the treatment of CIRS. And VIP is a peptide that has been synthesized in a lab – it is not “natural” in the sense that you can find it growing in nature.

Let me say that I hear you when you raise concerns about the heavy use of pharmaceuticals used in CIRS treatment. I believe there is room for a more integrated and functional approach.

But let us never forget to rely on the evidence. CIRS is bloody complicated. It’s easy to compare CIRS treatment to treating other conditions that response to natural supplements. However, CIRS is completely different than any other condition.

Currently, the only scientifically proven method of treating CIRS is the Shoemaker Protocol. So this is why I’m saying CIRS patients need to stick closely to the published evidence on CIRS.

If you want to add in natural supplements or treatments, ensure you talk to a trained Shoemaker practitioner first. It could improve your treatment – or they could make it worse.

Natural strategies that might support CIRS treatment

Right now we don’t have evidence to support the use of natural treatments in CIRS. The following suggestions are general principles anyone should follow for good health.

Here are some natural strategies for CIRS:

  1. Avoid exposure to biotoxins

The first step of the Shoemaker Protocol is to remove or reduce exposure to biotoxins. This may involve mold remediation, avoiding water-damaged buildings, and reducing exposure to other potential triggers like certain types of algae or bacteria.

  2. Clean diet

A healthy, anti-inflammatory diet can support the body’s healing process. Focus on whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats, and high-fibre foods. Avoid or minimize processed foods, refined sugars, artificial additives, and potential allergens or sensitivities.

  3. Detoxification

Support the body’s natural detoxification pathways. This can include staying hydrated, promoting regular bowel movements, and supporting liver function with foods or supplements that aid detoxification (e.g., milk thistle, dandelion root).

  4. Nutritional supplements

Certain supplements may support the body’s overall health and address specific deficiencies. This can include omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants (e.g., vitamins C and E), glutathione precursors (e.g., N-acetyl cysteine), and other nutrients that support immune function and reduce inflammation. However, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplements.

  5. Lifestyle modifications

Think stress reduction techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or gentle exercise. These can help support the body’s healing process and overall well-being.

  6. Sleep optimization

Focus on healthy sleep habits and ensure you get enough restorative sleep. Sleep plays a crucial role in the body’s healing and recovery processes.

  7. Supportive therapies

Some CIRS patients may benefit from complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, or infrared sauna sessions. These treatments may help reduce inflammation, support detoxification, and promote relaxation.

It’s important to remember that these natural strategies may work differently from person to person. Always consult your trained CIRS practitioner before starting anything new. They can help assess your individual situation, provide personalized recommendations, and monitor your progress.
